Tim Latimer started his career as a drilling engineer for BHP in the Permian and Eagle Ford basins. In 2017 he co-founded Fervo Energy to aim that same oilfield toolkit at hot rock instead of hydrocarbons.
On 30 September 2026 the bet hit a milestone. Fervo declared commercial operation at Cape Station in Utah, which it calls the first greenfield enhanced geothermal development to get there. The stock market has been far less generous than the rock.
Fervo Energy, by the numbers
- Founded 2017 in Houston by CEO Tim Latimer and CTO Jack Norbeck
- Method: horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to build engineered geothermal reservoirs, read with fiber-optic sensing
- Cape Station, Beaver County, Utah: Phase I of about 100 MW in three 33 MW GeoBlocks, first one in commercial operation since 30 September 2026
- Phase II: a further 400 MW under construction, targeted for 2028
- Google: 396 MW power purchase agreement signed 1 September 2026, with an option for about 600 MW more by June 2030
- Fervo reports over 1 GW of binding power purchase agreements across its portfolio
- IPO: 70 million shares at $27, Nasdaq ticker FRVO, trading from 13 May 2026; about $2.2 billion with the over-allotment
- Raised about $1.5 billion in equity, debt and grants by December 2025, according to the company
Geothermal was short of permeable rock, not heat
Conventional geothermal needs hot rock, natural fractures and moving water in the same place. That combination is rare, so plants cluster where geology has already done the work.
Latimer and his co-founder Jack Norbeck read this as a plumbing problem. The shale industry had already learned to move fluid through rock with almost no natural permeability. Their question was what happens if you push water through hot rock the same way.
The shale toolkit lets Fervo build the reservoir instead of finding it
Fervo drills a pair of horizontal wells into hot rock and fractures the zone between them. Water goes down one well, crosses the cracks, picks up heat and returns up the other to drive a turbine. Fiber-optic sensing adapted from oil and gas shows what the fractures are doing.
Speed is the commercial case. Fervo says its third-generation well design has lifted drilling rates 143% since the first Cape Station well. It also reports a well near 19,500 feet in a 460°F resource, drilled in 21 days from spud to total depth. These are company claims.
Nevada proved the physics and Google kept buying
Project Red, a 3.5 MW pilot in Nevada, was Fervo’s first horizontal-well enhanced geothermal system. Google and Fervo announced in late 2023 that it was supplying the grid that serves Google’s Nevada data centers, after a corporate agreement signed in 2021.
Orders grew in steps. In June 2024 Google, NV Energy and Fervo announced a 115 MW deal under Nevada’s Clean Transition Tariff. On 1 September 2026 Fervo and Google signed a 396 MW agreement for Cape Station, which Fervo calls the largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date.
Google also gets an option for about 600 MW more by June 2030. Fervo says final data center plans still depend on engineering, approvals and commercial conditions.
Cape Station reached commercial operation a day ahead of contract
Cape Station synchronised to the grid on 24 September 2026 and Fervo declared commercial operation on 30 September, one day before the contractual date. The first GeoBlock produced 33 MW of net power, the level its power purchase agreement expected.
No team has ever built a project like this anywhere in the world, and we did it ahead of schedule.
Tim Latimer, Fervo CEO, 1 October 2026
Fervo says it built and commissioned the first GeoBlock in 23 months and targets 18 months for later ones. The other two Phase I GeoBlocks are expected to reach contractual operation by 1 January 2027.

Capital followed each proof point, then the IPO raised about $2.2 billion
The $138 million Series C in August 2022 was led by DCVC. Devon Energy, an oil and gas producer, led a $244 million round in February 2024. A further $255 million of equity and debt arrived in December 2024.
In December 2025 Fervo closed an oversubscribed $462 million Series E led by B Capital, with Google, Mitsui & Co. and JB Straubel among the new investors. In March 2026 it closed $421 million of non-recourse project debt for Cape Station Phase I.
Fervo priced its IPO on 12 May 2026 at $27 a share, above a raised range of $25 to $26. Seventy million shares raised about $1.89 billion, and the full over-allotment lifted the total to roughly $2.2 billion. Trading began on Nasdaq on 13 May.
The market has since priced the risk the rock cannot remove
Shares closed their first day at $36.54, up 35%. Then came the first quarterly report on 12 August. Fervo reported revenue of $113,000, a net loss of $55.9 million and cash of $2.1 billion, and guided to $850 million to $900 million of capital spending in the second half.
The stock fell more than 21% in the days after, according to Motley Fool. Shares have traded far below the $27 offer price since. Treat that as a snapshot, not a verdict.
Founder lessons from a driller who changed sides
Redirect a neighbouring industry’s toolkit before you invent your own
Fervo did not invent horizontal drilling or fracturing. Its founders saw that shale had already paid for the tools and aimed them at heat.
Founders in nuclear, such as Valar Atomics and Radiant, face the same question of what to borrow and what to rebuild.
Prove the small deal and let the buyer size the next one
Google went from a 3.5 MW pilot to 115 MW to 396 MW. Each step was a purchase a rational buyer could make without betting the whole relationship.
Bluecore Energy, pitching a floating reactor at the Port of Long Beach, has the same sequencing problem: who buys first.
Public markets price schedule and cash, not just physics
Fervo hit its first commercial date early and still saw its shares fall. Investors now watch the cost per kilowatt: Fervo expects about $5,500 for Phase II against a long-term target of $3,000.
Grid-side founders such as Drew Baglino at Heron sell into the same surge in power demand, and will face the same scrutiny.
Final word
Fervo showed that the oil patch’s tools can make clean, around-the-clock power. Cape Station is now delivering it.
The next test is cheaper, faster GeoBlocks and a business that earns more than it spends. Watch the 1 January 2027 date.
