Elon Musk’s 5-Step Playbook for Killing Business Friction

Behind every successful hardware pivot, every autonomous workflow, and every shattered bottleneck, there is an underlying operating system. It is the framework that allows companies to scale at light speed while their competitors choke on bureaucracy.

It is Elon Musk’s 5-Step “Algorithm.”

Musk developed this framework through the agonizing “production hell” of the Tesla Model 3 and SpaceX Falcon 9, and he recently applied it to build the massive xAI supercomputer cluster in Memphis in record time.

If you want to kill workflow friction and scale your business, print this out and tape it to your wall.

Step 1: Make Your Requirements Less Dumb

“Your requirements are definitely dumb. It does not matter who gave them to you. It’s particularly dangerous if a smart person gave them to you, because you might not question them enough.”

In corporate environments, rules are treated like physics. They are not. Most requirements were made up by a well-meaning intern three years ago and never questioned again.

The Rule: A requirement must come with the name of a person, not a department. You cannot interrogate a department. You have to interrogate the person who owns the rule. If no one owns it, the rule is dead.

Step 2: Delete the Part or Process Step

“If you are not occasionally adding things back in, you are not deleting enough.”

This is the hardest step because it fights human psychology. Our limbic system remembers the pain of deleting something we later needed, so we overcompensate by hoarding useless steps “just in case.”

During the Model 3 ramp, the factory line was choking on a robotic station that applied fiberglass mats to the battery pack. Musk asked the battery safety team what the mats were for. “Noise and vibration,” they said. He asked the noise and vibration team. “Fire safety,” they said.

It was a Dilbert cartoon. Nobody knew why they existed. Musk ran a test with and without the mats. There was no difference. He deleted the step, bypassing a $2 million robot station instantly.

Step 3: Simplify or Optimize

“The most common error of a smart engineer is to optimize a thing that should not exist.”

We are trained in school to answer the question on the test. We are not trained to tell the professor that the question is stupid.

As a result, brilliant operators spend months optimizing a supply chain process or an enterprise workflow that should have simply been deleted in Step 2. Never optimize a process until you have ruthlessly fought to delete it first.

Step 4: Accelerate Cycle Time

“You are moving too slowly. Go faster. But do not go faster until you have worked on the other three things first.”

If you accelerate a flawed process, you just manufacture garbage at a higher velocity. Once you have purified the workflow (Questioned, Deleted, Simplified), then you apply pressure to move faster.

Step 5: Automate

This is the final step. And it is the one most companies try to do first.

Musk admits he routinely failed at this. With the Model 3 fiberglass mats, he tried to automate the robot, then accelerate it, then optimize it, and finally asked why it was there before deleting it. He did the Algorithm completely backward.

You cannot buy an AI agent to automate an undocumented, broken workflow. You have to clean the pipes before you turn on the high-pressure water.

Founder Lessons: Walk the Floor

Perhaps the greatest lesson from Musk’s Algorithm isn’t the 5 steps themselves, but how he enforces them.

While building the 100,000 GPU supercomputer in Memphis, Musk didn’t sit in a boardroom looking at Gantt charts. He walked the floor. He personally connected fiber optic cables to understand the physical friction of the installation.

You cannot delete a process from a dashboard. You have to feel the pain of the frontline worker.

The Algorithm is not just a manufacturing tool. It is a philosophy for fighting entropy.

As your business grows, it will naturally accumulate useless rules, redundant software, and legacy workflows. The Algorithm is the machete you use to hack your way back to speed.
